YEAR 4

Term 4 has us back in the classroom, it is a relief and students are glad to be around their friends again. But it has been a struggle for the class to get used to routines again. I would like to remind parents and students that if you are unwell you need to stay at home. It is extremely important because there are no bubble taps/drinking fountains because of Covid-19 that students have a refillable drink bottle every day especially as it is heating up.

In Maths students were introduced to long division and with a lot of hard work most were able to master the technique. Year 4s need to continue to work on multiplication and division and we will continue to use our multiplication charts to help us. Mathletics is available at any time for students to focus on basic skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Our English focus this term is Narrative writing and expanding stories out to four main parts Orientation, Complication, Resolution, and the Ending. We are working on story format, planning them first, having 1-2 paragraphs per section. We are also looking at editing our work. After we have finished writing, then we can look back and find errors and correct them. As well as, reading back and seeing what we have written makes sense. Remembering to correct punctuation, capitalization, and the proper use of paragraphs.

For Science we have learnt and experimented with different forces e.g. friction, gravity, magnetic field. We have completed a few simple experiments about the different forces. The students’ favorite was seeing how the magnetic force caused either attraction or repulsion of another magnet, based on whether its pole was north or south. In STEM, we built piper computers, we will see if we can program them.

In Art, we will be using a lot of colour and looking at different techniques like Pop Art and Mosaics to try our own versions of work. Students made some colourful hot air balloons using different patterns. In Drama, students will be writing and completing a news report.

Some students also dressed up for Book Week and during this week, we read as a group, “Loch Ness Monster Fact or Fiction?” It led to good discussions about the possibility of it being real or fake as conspiracy theories are something frequently discussed by Year 4s. During the week, the students completed their drawings of Nessie based on the descriptions from the book.
